UrbanEye Film Festival will take place between 7-11 November 2018
The fifth edition of the UrbanEye Film Festival will take place this year from 7 to 11 November, at Cinema Elvire Popesco and Teatrul Apollo 111. The UrbanEye Film Festival comments about the city and urban living through movies. The programme of the new edition consists of modern-day films, accompanied by debates with special guests, and special events, ranging from exhibitions and guided tours to workshops for children.
For five days, the audience will have the chance to watch documentaries and fictional films which revolve around habitation, explored in its many shapes and forms. Also, there will be film screenings about important modern architects, about approaches to urban areas through games and about other relevant subjects regarding built environment.
Habitation is one of the central themes of the festival. The viewers have the opportunity to watch films such as The Other Side of Everything (Director: Mila Turajlic), about an apartment split in two by the Serbian communist regime and the story of the family who lived in it; The Disappearance of Robin Hood (Director: Klearjos Eduardo Papanicolaou), about the demolition of the famed social housing complex designed by Peter and Alison Smithson; or Slums: Cities of Tomorrow (Director:Jean-Nicolas Orhon), about informal housing and the evolution of this kind of settlement throughout the world.
As in previous years, films about architects will be shown: REM (Director:Tomas Koolhaas), about the influential architect Rem Koolhaas, and Glenn Murcutt: Spirit of Place (Director: Catherine Hunter). In addition, viewers can watch films about how the houses of important figures, like Andrzej Wajda (in The Idea is Paramount. The Architectural Passions of Andrzej Wajda) and the mathematician Jim Stewart (in Integral Man), were built.
A national-premiere film is going to be displayed at the festival: Gaming the Real World, which highlights the ability of video games to stimulate the residents’ engagement in planning the areas where they live. The film tackles the concept of civic gamification, that is civic participation by means of video games, which contributes to the democratization of urban architecture and urban planning. Among those who offer a documented view on gamification are creators of video games, like Minecraft, Cities: Skyline or Block’hood.
The programme also includes special events, such as workshops for children and high school students, guided tours and the exhibition about habitation in Romania, created in partnership with MKBT: Make Better.
Many of the films presented at the festival have been a part of the selection of renowned international festivals and have received important awards. For instance, The Other Side of Everything won an award for Best Feature-Length Documentary at the Amsterdam International Documentary Film Festival and is one of the LUX Prize finalist movies, the film Aquarius won a prize at the Dublin International Film Festival, and Last Days in Shibati was presented at Cinéma du réel – International Documentary Film Festival.
